Become a FIRST LEGO League Mentor

Volunteer Mentors Needed for FIRST LEGO League (FLL)

Help a small team of young people build a LEGO robot, tackle a real-world challenge, and discover what they can accomplish together.

You do not need to be a robotics expert

FLL mentors are guides, not lecturers. Your role is to ask good questions, encourage experimentation, and help students work through problems as a team.

Experience with robotics, coding, engineering, skilled trades, education, coaching, or project work is welcome—but none of it is required. We provide orientation, resources, and ongoing support.

What you’ll do

As an FLL mentor, you will help students:

  • Design, build, and program a LEGO robot

  • Complete missions for the annual FIRST LEGO League challenge

  • Develop and present an innovation project

  • Practise teamwork, resilience, creativity, and problem-solving

You’ll work with other adults supporting the team; you won’t be expected to manage everything alone.

Time commitment

  • Approximately two hours per week

  • Late September through early December

  • One local competition or celebration event near the end of the season

  • Meeting times and Guelph locations will be confirmed as teams are matched

Consistency matters to the students, so we ask mentors to participate for the full short season wherever possible.

Who can mentor?

This role can suit:

  • Parents and community members

  • University or college students

  • Engineers, programmers, designers, technologists, and skilled tradespeople

  • Educators, coaches, and youth-program volunteers

  • Retirees looking for a structured and meaningful way to contribute

More important than your résumé is patience, reliability, curiosity, and enthusiasm for helping young people learn.
