Parent Orientation & Expectations

Dear Families,

We’re excited to have your child join our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) team this season! FLL is not just an after-school activity—it’s an international program designed to help students develop STEM skills, creativity, teamwork, and leadership.

To ensure your child gets the most out of this experience, we want to be clear: it is a team commitment, where each student is an important contributor.

What FLL Is About
  • Hands-on STEM learning: Designing, programming, and testing LEGO robots.

  • Research & innovation: Exploring real-world problems and proposing creative solutions.

  • Core Values: Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, and Fun.

  • Presenting & sharing: Students learn to communicate their work with judges, peers, and the community.

Expectations of Students
  • Attend regularly and arrive ready to contribute.

  • Take on team roles and responsibilities (robot build, coding, research, presentation prep, etc.).

  • Work collaboratively and respectfully with teammates and mentors.

  • Track goals and progress—this is a team project, not just playtime.

Expectations of Families
  • Support at home: Ask your child about their role, progress, and what they’ve learned.

  • Participation: When possible, volunteer to help (snacks, transportation, sharing expertise, event support).

  • Engagement: Attend showcases, competitions, and celebration events.

  • Respect the purpose: Please don’t treat sessions as drop-off childcare. Mentors are here to coach, not supervise.

Why This Matters

When students take ownership, and when families stay engaged, FLL becomes transformational—building confidence, skills, and friendships that last long beyond the season.

Thank you for helping us make this an enriching and purposeful experience for every student!

Sincerely,
Your Coaching Team
