The 2025 season is already off to an amazing start!
Over the past four weeks, Team 2609: Beaverworx has been hard at work welcoming new members, building new skills, and preparing for our first off-season event — the STEMley Cup.
Here’s what we’ve been up to so far:
Weeks 1–2 — Welcoming New Members
Our preseason kicked off with a wave of energy and curiosity as we welcomed a large group of new students into the team — including those enrolled in the brand-new Robotics course.
Highlights from our opening weeks:
Team Scavenger Hunt: New students worked in groups of 4–5 alongside veteran members, exploring the shop, meeting mentors, and learning how each sub-team contributes to building our robots.
2609 Roulette: Rookies rotated through fun, hands-on stations covering programming, mechanical assembly, media & marketing, the history of FRC, and mechanical design.
Course Introduction: Students learned how the new robotics course connects classroom projects directly to real-world FRC challenges.
Community Impact: Several students also took part in Trees for Guelph, helping plant trees and give back to the community.
It was an energetic start full of collaboration, laughter, and first-time robot experiences. Exactly what preseason is all about!
Weeks 2–3 — Building Skills and Creativity
As the robotics course began in full swing, students started working on real engineering projects and exploring the creative side of team culture.
Swerve Drive Project: Students assembled and tested swerve modules, gaining first-hand experience with precision mechanical systems and advanced drivetrains.
Merch Brainstorming: Our media and marketing team began designing new team merchandise and branding ideas for the upcoming season.
Robot Demonstration: During OLOL’s Parent-Teacher Night, students proudly demonstrated the robot to families and educators, showcasing what FRC is all about and inspiring future team members.
Week 4 — STEMley Cup Prep
With the STEMley Cup off-season event on the horizon, Week 4 was all about preparation and practice.
Robot Tuning: Mechanical and electrical sub-teams performed final checks to make sure our robot was ready for action.
Driver Training: New and interested students got some valuable stick-time with Nautilus. These students got to learn some of the nuances of driving a swerve drive and the specifics of controlling such a complicated robot like Nautilus.
Practice Swerve Base: Students continued building our new swerve drivetrain, an ongoing learning project that will support both programming and driver training.
Alumni Visits: A few of our alumni returned to offer advice, stories, and mentorship reminding everyone that the Beaverworx spirit doesn’t end at graduation.
Impact Award Planning: The impact team began early brainstorming for this year’s submission, gathering stories from our community outreach and student initiatives.
